Macro Lens For Product Photography

There are a lot of misconceptions about macro lenses but probably the biggest one is the word “macro”. You would probably think that you don’t need it since a lot of people connect it with shooting bugs and flowers from a close-up. Of course, macro lenses can be used for much more and one of the applications is product photography.

Macro Lens For Product Photography

If you are shooting a smaller object with a lot of tiny details macro lens is a must! These items are usually something like jewelry, microchips, circuitry components, earrings, etc. In this post I will give a detailed guide on how to properly use them to take photos of products, which ones are the best out there currently in 2023, and of course some bonus tips along the way.

‍Standard Lenses

When I first delved into photography, my trusty standard lens was my go-to choice. These lenses typically offer a focal length that’s close to what the human eye sees, making them incredibly versatile for a wide range of photography styles. Whether it’s a sweeping landscape or a bustling city street, a standard lens can capture scenes with a natural and realistic perspective.

However, when it comes to product photography, the limitations of a standard lens become apparent. While they do an admirable job capturing the overall essence of a product, they struggle to bring out the minute textures and intricate details that make your products truly shine.

Wide-Angle Lenses

These beauties are a staple for landscape photographers, capturing the grandeur of vast vistas in all their glory. Their wider field of view allows you to squeeze more into the frame, making them excellent for showing off spacious environments and creating a sense of depth.

But hold on a second—can wide-angle lenses work their magic in the realm of product photography? Well, while they might give you a unique perspective, they tend to exaggerate proportions and can distort the finer details that are crucial when showcasing products. Trust me, that strikingly wide shot of a tiny product might not do it justice.

Macro Lenses

Now, let’s talk about the superheroes of product photography: macro lenses. Imagine being able to zoom in so close that you reveal the intricate texture of a fabric, the subtle imperfections in a piece of jewelry, or the delicate brushstrokes on a piece of art. That’s where macro lenses come into play.

Macro lenses are designed to capture subjects at incredibly close distances, allowing you to magnify even the tiniest details. These lenses boast a high level of magnification, ensuring that every nuance of your subject is showcased in all its splendor. Whether you’re shooting products for an e-commerce website or compiling a stunning portfolio, macro lenses can elevate your work to a whole new level.

So, there you have it—the key differences between standard, wide-angle, and macro lenses. While each has its place in the world of photography, when it comes to capturing the mesmerizing intricacies of your products, a macro lens is undoubtedly the tool you’ll want to have in your arsenal. Stay tuned as we dive deeper into the techniques and tips for mastering macro photography in the next installment of our series!

Best Overall Macro Lenses For Product Photography

1. Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro Lens

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras, Lens Only

This lens is simply the best in my opinion when it comes to product photography in general. It will allow you to shoot both bigger and smaller products such as rings and jewelry keeping each particular detail of the ideas in the photos. Of course, you will be able to shoot from a very small range of your product and be able to focus being only about 15cm away from the subject. Its macro function is outstanding for shooting small items. I don’t think that any of the lenses that I will be mentioning down below will be able to generate this amount of detail.

Of course, a few downsides will follow any of the macro lenses and that is, you won’t be able to take a photo if you have limited space to work with around the product. Also if you are working with the crop sensor camera.

The thing that stands out about this lens is that it is crazy sharp. Because of its long focal length, it does not present any distortions to the image.

Another thing I love about it is that it is a prime lens and if you are used to using zoom lenses and you jump to prime lenses you will see a clear difference in the sharpness.

When it comes to L series lenses their price range is from 250$ to 1000$ and this one can be picked up in a range from 500 to 1000. Of course that is considered low as this is the high-end lens.

The last thing I love about this lens is that it has image stabilization. This means that you can use it both for photos and videos as well, how cool is that!?

So, it has an f2.8 for apparatus which is pretty good but not that great. Once you mix it with it you can get low-light performance with this lens.

2. Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di VC USD Macro

Tamron AFF017N700 SP 90mm F/2.8 Di VC USD 1:1 Macro for Nikon Cameras (Black)

In the ever-evolving world of photography gear, certain lenses stand the test of time, becoming legends in their own right. The Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di VC USD Macro, released back in 2004, is undoubtedly one such gem that has earned its place in the hearts and camera bags of macro photography enthusiasts. Let’s take a closer look at why this lens continues to captivate photographers even after all these years.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Tamron SP 90mm Macro lens is its compatibility across a range of camera mounts. Whether you’re a Canon, Nikon, Sony-Minolta A, or Pentax user, this lens seamlessly integrates with your setup, giving you the creative freedom you desire. This versatility makes it an ideal choice for photographers who may switch between different camera systems or collaborate with fellow photographers using various gear.

The 27-degree angle of view provided by this lens offers a sweet spot that’s perfect for a variety of macro photography scenarios.

Whether you’re capturing the intricacies of delicate flowers, the texture of fabrics, or the mesmerizing details of jewelry, this lens ensures that you’re able to frame your subjects beautifully. Additionally, this angle of view strikes a balance between isolating your subject and providing a context within the environment, resulting in captivating compositions.

Equipped with a 55mm filter thread, the Tamron SP 90mm Macro lens opens up opportunities for creative experimentation. This standard filter size allows photographers to easily access a wide variety of filters, from polarizers to close-up diopters, enhancing the versatility of the lens even further.

The non-rotating focus mechanism comes as a boon for photographers, as it ensures that your carefully composed shots remain just the way you intended. This feature is particularly useful when using gradient filters to balance exposure in challenging lighting conditions.

Additionally, the extendable barrel is a valuable asset, allowing you to get closer to your subjects without any compromise on image quality. This feature becomes especially handy when photographing skittish insects or other subjects where maintaining a comfortable shooting distance is crucial.

One of the hallmarks of macro lenses is their ability to deliver life-sized magnification, and the Tamron SP 90mm Macro lens is no exception. With a maximum magnification of 1:1, it brings to life the world of tiny details that often go unnoticed by the naked eye. This capability is a game-changer, especially when you’re seeking to capture the essence of intricate subjects.

From the delicate patterns on butterfly wings to the subtle textures of artisanal crafts, this lens empowers you to explore and present the miniature wonders of the world in stunning detail.

The design of the Tamron SP 90mm Macro lens doesn’t just stop at exceptional image quality. The recessed front element, set deep within the lens body, practically eliminates the chance of stray flares creeping into your shots.

This feature alone grants you the freedom to experiment with lighting conditions without worrying about unwanted artifacts. Whether you’re shooting directly into the sun for a dramatic effect or working with intricate studio lighting setups, this lens ensures that your images remain clear and true to your vision.

For those who favor Canon or Nikon versions equipped with a built-in motor, the push-pull mechanism provides a seamless transition between auto and manual focus. This unique design element simplifies the process of fine-tuning focus and composition, ensuring that you never miss a crucial detail.

However, if you’re opting for the Pentax version, you’ll find yourself engaging manual focus directly on the camera body—a minor adjustment that underscores the adaptability of this lens. This subtle distinction also highlights the collaborative effort between Tamron and different camera manufacturers to optimize user experience while maintaining the lens’s exceptional optical quality.

In a world where technology and innovation continue to push boundaries, the Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di VC USD Macro stands as a reminder that timeless craftsmanship and thoughtful design are truly timeless.

So, whether you’re exploring the wonders of the microcosm or capturing the subtlest details of your subjects, this lens promises to be your steadfast companion on your photographic journey. Its ability to adapt to different mounts, deliver breathtaking magnification, and resist flare while maintaining impeccable image quality solidifies its status as a classic choice for macro photography aficionados.

If you’re armed with an APS-C Canon DSLR and a passion for product photography, allow me to introduce you to the versatile marvel that is the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM. While this lens might be stepping into its twilight years, its capabilities continue to shine brightly, making it a compelling choice for capturing the intricate beauty of your subjects. Let’s embark on a journey through the specifications and features that make this lens a must-have for your creative arsenal.

With its mount designed exclusively for Canon EF-S, this lens is tailor-made for your APS-C sensor camera, ensuring optimal compatibility and performance. Boasting an impressive arrangement of 15 elements in 12 groups, this lens’s optical structure is engineered to deliver exceptional clarity and detail. The diaphragm’s 9 blades contribute to achieving a smooth and appealing bokeh, adding a touch of magic to your compositions.

The Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM features an ultrasonic (ring-type) autofocus mechanism that swiftly locks onto your subjects, allowing you to seize fleeting moments with precision. The hybrid stabilizer offers an added advantage, particularly when exploring the realms of macro photography. This innovative stabilization technology counters both angular and shift movements, ensuring that your shots remain steady even when capturing the tiniest nuances of your subjects.

Macro photography thrives on capturing the minuscule details that often go unnoticed. What sets this lens apart is its built-in LED light, which opens up new avenues for creativity. The soft, diffused illumination provided by the LED helps you cast just the right amount of light on your subjects, effectively highlighting their delicate textures and intricate features. This feature proves invaluable, especially when you’re dealing with intricate subjects in low-light settings.

With its compact dimensions measuring 78x123mm and a weight of 625g, the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM is a lightweight powerhouse ready to accompany you on your photographic adventures. Its portability makes it a practical choice for on-the-go shooting, whether you’re capturing the essence of products in a studio setup or exploring the world outdoors.

While this lens excels in capturing the captivating details of small subjects, its generous aperture of f/2.8 broadens its horizons. This wide aperture not only allows for remarkable low-light performance but also opens the door to creative depth-of-field effects. From isolating intricate details against dreamy bokeh to capturing stunning environmental portraits, this lens’s versatility extends far beyond the realm of macro photography.

It’s worth noting that as with any piece of technology, the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM comes with its considerations. Sharpness might show a hint of compromise at narrow apertures, which can slightly affect the overall image quality in certain scenarios. Additionally, the lens’s 35mm focal length (equivalent to 56mm on a full-frame sensor) might be perceived as slightly short for traditional macro work, but this also offers unique creative possibilities, enabling you to capture subjects with a broader context.

In conclusion, the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM stands as a versatile tool that beautifully marries the world of macro photography with the creative opportunities of a prime lens. While it may be moving toward the end of its production cycle, its LED illumination, hybrid stabilizer, and generous f/2.8 aperture continue to make it a valuable asset for product photographers. So, if you’re seeking to uncover the intricate splendor of the miniature world, consider adding this lens to your kit and embark on a journey of visual discovery.
